Do you want to hear God speak to you? Is that possible? What does the voice of God sound like? If you have been a follower of Jesus for any length of time, you have probably heard or read quite a bit about prayer- things like why do we pray, how to pray, what to pray for, and so on. Although you may have heard that prayer is meant to be a two way conversation between you and God, perhaps you have heard very little about the listening aspect of prayer. As believers, we do have the capacity to ‘hear’ God’s voice deep within us. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and they know Me and they follow Me” (John 10:27). How is it that we hear the voice of Jesus?

God speaks to His people in various ways such as through Scripture, the creation, our circumstances, other people, sermons, podcasts, books, art, and music. These forms of communication come to us from an external source and are received through our senses. God also communicates with us directly through our thoughts and emotions. To hear from God in this way, we need to be paying attention. It is necessary to spend time in prayer being quiet and simply listening for God’s voice. To be able to do this, we must cut off other sounds and other voices, put away our cell phones, calm our busy minds, and simply focus on listening to Jesus. This can be challenging at first, but if we truly want to hear His voice and are willing to spend some time in silence, He knows how to get through to us. Pay attention to your thoughts and emotions, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to discern what is from the Lord. Ask God to speak to you, and be ready to listen and to respond!
